Your suggestions to save the Palme Salento Lecce

Your suggestions to save the Palme Salento Lecce

Antonio Bruno *

--------------------------------

I had my inbox flooded, even submerged, by mail to owners of small pieces of rural landscape where there are palm trees that are within the scope of the Consortium of Reclamation "Ugento Fogg and Li" which have infested palms Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Awl red). The debate is ongoing and we will see what will be the developments and findings. Some of the email I received contain hints that I felt should be owned in all other respects as showing that feeding the debate can afford to have a broader vision of the situation in Salento Lecce.

Dear Antonio,

No executive in the determination 480/2010 (Official Gazette of the Region No. 113 1 July 2010) is taken over the "Ministerial Decree 11/7/2007: New rules for finding and killing the palm trees infested by Rhynchophorus ferrugineus and provision of assistance for Regional . The measure approved the guidelines for the adoption of phytosanitary measures aimed to control Rhynchophorus ferrugineus and the statement, which may be drawn from both the plant protection inspectors from the Defense Technical Consortiums of Brindisi and Lecce to these provinces. Support will be provided to municipalities for the costs of abatement and disposal.

In the Technical Note of the Ministry, attached to the determination, it is argued that the success of the application of phytosanitary measures should be the most extensive collaboration between:

• The Central Service for Plant Protection, with regard to regulatory issues in general;

• the regional plant protection services, to define the specific phytosanitary measures to be taken, monitoring their observance and the development of research to control the pest;

• Technical Services of the Agricultural Development and Communities to assist in the monitoring phase and disclosure;

• individuals, provincial and municipal governments, as owners of many public or private areas for the implementation of phytosanitary measures;

• operators are engaged in defending the green of the palms;

• professional associations.

In my opinion, as I have said at some meetings that you promoted among members with professional bodies, given the severity of the infestation, you must complete this "network" of individuals, already somewhat sketchy by the Ministry, with other possible parties involved in some way in the area.

For some time the Botanical Garden of the University is conscious of the problem of palm trees in the Land of Otranto, which represent an important presence in the landscape many of the villas and gardens of historic interest (see References) is already known our position on problem, as expressed by prof. Marchiori and myself and dissemination of knowledge in the seminar entitled "Le Palme Salento, a glorious past, an uncertain future", organized by the Botanical Garden and held in Lecce 26 September 2008, namely: if the palm in many cases vegetation altered the landscape of Salento (see those recently planted on the seafront or holiday resorts on the coast or even the bathing establishments), in other cases it has created real landscape systems (eg the area around Lecce Cupa, villas Alezio, those of Leuca, Lecce's historic center and several historic mansions, including The Apothecary), and should, therefore, in our opinion, concentrate the bulk of the resources on the palms which are all recognized and somehow "certificate" of the landscape rural areas (villas and farms) and historic centers (buildings and public gardens). This could be done according to simple protocols developed by specialists. On all other situations (see examples in small public and private gardens of new construction) the investment of resources (human and financial) should be proportionally lower.

If the consortium, given its link with the territory and in particular with private property, you want candidates to have a coordinating role for the part of its area of jurisdiction, that is fine, but this course will also rely on those who are Directives already in place and what is a desirable (albeit late) scientific and technical collaboration between all relevant stakeholders.

Best regards

Dear Antonio,

are all in favor of your proposal, partly because very often the local governments in many towns of our province have considerable difficulty in taking action for economic reasons and we are forced to attend, with significant discomfort, the slow extermination of palm trees in urban areas. In addition, many small land owners of the landscape do not always know whom you should pay and how to intervene and advance, that under attack by the beetle. So I think that the fact that this technical assistance activities of the Consortium of Reclamation "Ugento and Li Fogg" can at least raise the awareness.

As always are present in the real problems that occur in our area! Bravo, keep it up!

A hug Giancarlo Biasco

Dear Dr. Anthony Bruno for a couple of days I get, I do not know in what capacity, its reports on the palms and disease due to the red snout, very interesting, culturally speaking, I do not know the history of palm trees and had no interest in them until a year and a half ago.

I'm not an agronomist, but I have two degrees, a master of the other senior surveyor in place and I am a farmer.

A year and a half ago I bought a farm in the territory god Melilli (SR) where among other things, made a nice six figure palms with a trunk about 4 feet beyond a small grove of seedlings spontaneous.

In September 2009, the inevitable red weevil attack on two of them to race I can tell, I ask, do research, the decision was always a wait there's nothing to do and indeed does not say anything to destroy the breast with incineration costs exaggerated.

It was as if my two sons were suffering from cancer and had end-stage.

I bought a nice aluminum ladder, I got up their sleeves, as they say to us, and I began to know this so hungry red punch, touch the problem and spending a lot of time on the scale ..

In this year and a half of experience I can say I understood something about him.

It is not so fierce and dangerous is simply a being that is not countered is proliferating.

The insecticide used in agriculture kills him, kills the larvae at an early stage and when they are waiting to become cocooned in adult punch. the problem and how to make him swallow, I succeeded, I was able to guess when it comes on a healthy plant, this would be the best time to intervene with insecticide to prevent infestation.

One of the trees being attacked at an advanced stage of infestation is dead, another in June last year after the treatment had made a new sprouts, which was then destroyed by a new attack (without this palm shoot, after a year and a half, not is not dead yet, are stuck about fifteen branches are still green) while the other four continued attacks are still alive and well.

The above is to say that the P.R. is so strong because the contrast is weak.

The palm trees are dying for the ignorance of man and all those who do philosophy (we all know the things philosophy is to practice with which and without which we remain as-is).

The drug manufacturers have no interest in plant protection register the insecticide as a drug suitable for treatment of palm trees and thus could not be used in public places.

True that the palms do not produce a good income but are priceless landscape

For about a year I write in various newspapers and blogs that allow you to add a comment, saying that the PR can be stopped and destroyed, those who asked me for free I gave my advice on the methodology to be used with the insecticide, many are having results, if you want to check on the internet looking for Salvatore Piccolo - Sicily.

However, even if the infested plant does not survive, of course, with the insecticide were killed all PR present in it.

While leaving the palm die all the time from the PR who lived in it (several hundred) to fly off and infect others with the consequences we're seeing.

We say also that one is right until there is' nothing but talking, so it is with the PR He is strong because there is no one to counter .-

In my area are surrounded by palm trees that are dying because of the indifference of all and know that there's nothing to do.

They are convinced to have a practical and effective method to eradicate.

Excuse me if there is any error in the speech and if I bothered you but I'm not having anything to sell, give my advice to those who asked me why I rage against this being unspeakable and against the institutions that do not ill-informed do nothing.

Mr. Bruno would like to receive more information about you.

Salvatore Piccolo - Sicily

PS. is not the punch that destroys the palm, but its larva.

Dear Dr. Antonio Bruno

I am writing because I think this terrible infestation that affects the palms I wonder whether it is appropriate to try to save them without resorting to a strategy of "drug" but with a methodology more 'empirical advantageously exploits the fact that the traps are Rhynchophorus all alone 'inside the stem of the plant. I try to enter the base of the palm three electrodes connected to the current and three in the top of the plant. Exploiting the fact that the electrical conduction within the shaft and 'possible due to the presence of lymph and probably a few shock enough to damage the insect without harming the plant, using the fact that once inside the insect can not 'miss and still hit a tree and dall'insetto' destined to die, I ask what he thinks and if it is not appropriate to try ....

I am following with great interest his columns and I take this opportunity to extend my greetings.
